From Here to There, Paths to Writing Are Everywhere

calculator-385506__180When I was growing up, I wanted to be a journalist. Instead, I got a degree in Accounting. In fact, I once had a freelancing client look at me strangely and remark, “Hmm. Don’t hear of that too often.” Maybe so!

Growing up in my family’s restaurant business, the economy tanked in the mid-eighties and to make a long story short, they wound up selling the business. It was a tough time for my family. My parents went back to working in the professions they’d been trained in – my father, as a teacher, my mother, as a nurse. Money was tight. I remember not being able to get a new dress for my Confirmation and being upset. I now look back as a parent and understand that there was never a time we didn’t have food on the table. It was all good.

It was at that time my parents encouraged me to get a degree in business. And it was a good plan – get a degree in something you’ll always be able to get a job in. That turned out to be Accounting for me. The complete opposite of creative right? I worked in the profession for about a decade and gained a lot of experience – more than I could’ve realized.

book-1014197__180I’d never stopped writing, and after I had my daughter, I went after the dream I’d never really given up on – becoming a writer. I hung my shingle out as a freelance writer – specializing in business writing. So, by and by, I’d become my version of a journalist. Still, I longed to write stories of my own. So I did. Several, before being published. The journey continues – and the detail side of things continues to serve me well.

So, as Dr. Seuss so aptly and brilliantly put it, “funny things are everywhere.” And apparently, so are paths to a writing career.

How did you choose your current profession or trade? Or did it choose you? What journey did you take to get there?
